Coarse-fine mixtures subjected to repetitive Ko loading: Effects of fines fraction, particle shape, and size ratio

This study explores the effects of fines fraction, particle shape, and size ratio on long-term response sand-silt mixtures with fraction FF = 0-to-100% during Ko-loading cycles i 104. The void for all specimens evolves toward asymptotic terminal eT that captures transition from coarse-to-fine controlled behavior. Shear wave velocity versus intergranular eC equivalent (eC)eq ratios estimates participation rate fines-in-sand force chain. More fine particles contribute to load-carrying skeleton as shape becomes rounder decreases. In contrast, shear against interfine eF (eF)eq reflects reinforcing effect coarse grains floating in matrix. sand fine-dominant matrix leads more significant fabric changes. Clearly, there is a repetitive load-deformation promotes reassessment current soil classification systems.
